Most of us have some type of valuables in our homes that we want to keep from others or hide in case of a burglary. Small things. Cash, jewelry, whatever. We try to think of good hiding places, but just about every place we think of is a place a thief would probably look. Even a free standing safe can be hauled off.
So how about hiding these things right in plain sight? It's kind of the chameleon effect - a chameleon changes color to blend into it's surroundings, hiding in plain sight. Now, a thief breaking into your home is only going to spend about 8 minutes looking for valuables and money. He'll ransack the place, pull out drawers, open closets, look behind books, under objects, whatever.
And there in your pantry or under your sink or in your bathroom or in your garage will be your valuables, hiding in plain sight. You see, there are objects known as diversion safes that blend into their surroundings. They are every day containers of soup, soda, engine degreaser, foot powder, a can of dog food, peanut butter, a book - you name it, there's a diversion safe waiting for your valuables, hiding in plain sight.
These diversion safes are weighted down to feel like the real thing, yet they open from the top and bottom to hide whatever small items you want to hide. I guess the only thing you have to worry about is someone in your family thinking it is the real thing and trying to open that can of dog food for Fido.
The diversion safe is probably best for single individuals living alone so that you can keep it with the other canned goods or personal care items and not worry about a family member moving it or trying to use it for real. But even within a family there are specific items others won't touch, such as a can of hair spray, which is why there are so many different safes to choose from.
Unfortunately, in this day and age, sometimes it is necessary to hide money from your own kids or other members of the household, maybe a roommate. If you are pretty sure they won't be looking for a book to read, you can use the book safe. Or if you want to keep valuables from your kids, and you know they won't be opening a can of fruit cocktail or dried soup, try these diversion safes.
And get this, if you really want to be sneaky, there is even a wall electrical socket safe that opens up out of the wall and pushes back into it, looking like nothing but an electrical outlet. Just don't forget about that one when you move! You may not find these diversion safes at your local hardware store, but they are easy to find on the internet.
And actually, you could even create your own diversion safes. I have one that's an Ovaltine plastic jar. It sits in the pantry and since the plastic is tinted dark brown you can't see what's really in it. It just looks like a jar of Ovaltine. But it's tall enough to hide money, jewelry, even important papers.
So, play it safe with a diversion safe. Hide your valuables in plain sight!
